A Popular and Effective Teaching Method
A large number of professional dog trainers use the clicker training method in place of verbal praise to let the dog know that their response to a command is correct. A clicker is a small hand-held device that is designed to make a small abrupt clicking sound when it is pressed. Many of those who use this particular training tool find that their dogs respond very well to it and learn faster than when verbal praise is given.
Why exactly is a clicker better than verbal praise?
Essentially, the main reason is that the sound is distinct and never changes. When you use words or sounds to commend desirable behaviour the tone and pitch of your voice can vary. Dogs recognize sounds not words, which is often why usually a one or a two syllable word is used to represent a command. Also, clicking is a more immediate method of praise, which is important because you only have a few short seconds to associate your pet’s response with your approval before their mind wonders.
How does a clicker work in training?
It’s very simple, you give your dog a command such as “Sit” and when he sits, you immediately click the device and reward your dog with a treat. This lets your dog know you approve of his response. Once he associates the sound with a reward, the faster he will understand what he is doing is the correct action with each new instruction you teach him. Note: A reward can also consist of petting, a good scratch or anything positive if you want to give something other than treats during training.
What type of clicker should I use?
There are different types of clickers available but the one you will want is very small and fits between two fingers. This is the ideal sized clicker because you can easily conceal it from your pooch. It is a good idea to hide this tool from your canine because you want his attention always on you. The last thing you want is your clicker to become a distraction.
Note:
It is also in your best interest to have more than one clicker. Ideally you should have the one you normally use, a back up in case that one breaks, and a clicker that's easy to travel with (I.E. one on your key chain).
